What AILS your CELLS#1

What if we told you that you were not designed to fall sick? And that you can reverse any illness with minimal intervention from the outside?

YES, the former is very true and latter is pretty much possible. Let’s start by understanding the basics first…

Who are YOU?

Biologically speaking, you are nothing but a collection of trillions of cells. By definition these cells are the structural and functional units of your life. Every individual cell in your body is designed to take care of its own self by maintaining a natural state of balance. Your overall health is represented by this harmony within each cell and in its interaction with the others. In scientific terms this is known as Homeostasis – a dynamic state of equilibrium that provides an optimal functioning of your body.

The age, function, scope, limitation etc. of each cell of your body was a pre-decided parameter. This decision was made at the time of your conception and largely depended on which part of the body that cell will belong to in the future. As a result different cells of your body are continuously renewed at different time periods. Thus your ability to renew each cell empowers you to heal yourself naturally by providing the right conditions. We will deal with the topic of renewal of cells in much detail in our upcoming blog on ageing.

You are the DNA

You were developed from a single fertilised cell (zygote) formed by the union of your parents’ cells (read sperm & ovum) that contributed the original genetic material. From this single cell you continuously multiplied into thousands of cells to become an embryo. Continuing further to millions of cells you transformed into a foetus and finally came into this world as a baby. So what made all this happen? It was the information that was coded in your DNA contained in the centre (nucleus) of that single cell. Till date that code has been guiding your every cell to perform its specific function. Thus the cell of your eye efficiently does the seeing and that of the excretory organs the peeing and pooing. Additionally the code also carries information of the self repair mechanisms for the cell. All of this is intended to untiringly continue until you live.

The DNA is YOU

The information contained in your DNA is responsible and expressed through your Genotype & Phenotype. Simply put, your genotype is what you have inherited from your parents (and their ancestors) and your phenotype is how you express these characteristics in presence of the external factors. In other words, your overall physical and mental makeup forms your unique (genetic) Constitution whereas your reaction (or overreaction) to an external stimulus becomes your (acquired) Tendency (diathesis) towards it (read disease causing factor).

Examples of genotype & phenotype are (i) although you normally bear two hands and five fingers like any other human being your fingerprints do not match anyone else’s, (ii) you might resemble any one or both of your parents physically but are very different from them mentally, (iii) this is demonstrated further in identical twins who despite of their physical resemblance are invariably different in their respective behaviours etc.

We will look at the factors that influence your cells in our next blog; What AILS your CELLS#2.

For now just note that what affects your DNA effects your cells.

Keep reading and happy healing!
