What’s so important about your blood?

Blood is the largest connective tissue in your body that is in a liquid state. It serves as a transportation system that connects all the body structures by providing the required materials (oxygen, nutrients, hormones and other substances) whilst simultaneously removing the wastes. Although the quantity of your blood remains stable under normal conditions its quality constantly varies. It is influenced by both internal and external factors and any alteration in its properties plays a significant role in the disease process.

The 3 key elements that decide the overall quality of blood are its cell population (types), viscosity (thickness & stickiness) and pH (acidity or alkalinity). The first one is more of a functional element as different cell types are required to perform specific physiological functions allocated to each type. The other two have physical bearing on the quality. Viscosity is essential to allow it to pass through various tissues (perfusion). The thickness and stickiness renders your blood easy or difficult to circulate throughout the body. Any hindrance to its flow slows down your body’s normal mechanisms. The viscous nature of your blood is dependent on several intrinsic parameters such as its flow rate, bio-chemical characteristics, temperature, condition of blood vessels etc. The pH on the other hand is largely dependent on external factors and is discussed further below.


pH meaning potential of hydrogen is a measure of hydrogen ion concentration in a liquid. It is measured on a scale of 0 -14 (7 being neutral) and decides the chemical nature of the liquid. Anything above 7 is considered alkaline and below it is acidic. The normal range for human blood is 7.35 to 7.45 (slightly alkaline), which means that your cells thrive in an alkaline environment only. Under normal physiological conditions the ingredients that play a key role in maintaining the blood pH are your food and water.

Acidity vs Alkalinity

The lungs and kidneys are eliminating organs of your body that play a key role in maintaining the acid-alkaline balance. These organs are in a constant run to keep up your body’s pH balance. When the balance is disturbed the blood becomes either too acidic (pH below 7.35; acidosis) or too alkaline (pH above 7.45; alkalosis). Severe acidosis or alkalosis is usually caused due to underlying disease conditions (e.g. prolonged vomiting, diarrhoea, uncontrolled diabetes). However, in daily life this is due to improper food & water intake especially in current lifestyle & habits. Something that constantly keeps the blood in acidic conditions. We like to call this state as chronic systemic acidity.

The food you eat is broken down (digested) by the stomach acid and leaves the stomach as an acidic mixture (chyme). The acidic chyme has to be made alkaline because your body’s enzymes work best in alkaline conditions. This is done by the bile (made in the liver and stored in the gall bladder) and sodium bicarbonate (from the pancreas). Whatever you eat thus has to leave behind an alkaline base to be eventually taken up by the blood. Therefore, while choosing your food the acid-alkaline potential of it is an important factor to be considered. This equally applies to your water too. To summarise, your blood’s pH is vital for cellular survival as it provides a conducive environment for your cells.
